1. Kusatsu in Gunma - internationally famous for the highest output of thermal water (35,000 liters every minute) in Japan
2. Noboribetsu in Hokkaido - boiling mud pools and sulfuric geysers
3. Yufuin in Oita - spa town with cultural flavor
4. Ibusuki in Kagoshima - hot sand baths along the beach
5. Gero in Gifu - renowned for its treatment of neuralgia, rheumatism and skin diseases
6. Kurokawa in Kumamoto - 24 inns and 25 outdoor baths surrounded by natural and tranquil scenery
7. Dogo in Ehime - venerable public bathhouses
8. Wakura in Ishikawa - saline water known for its healing powers for rheumatism, wounds and dyspepsia
9. Kinosaki in Hyogo - with a history of 1,400 years mentioned by many novelists in their works
10. Arima in Hyogo - one of the oldest when the nation's capital was Nara or Kyoto, celebrated for cherry blossoms in spring and maple leaves in autumn
